About the Museum

Is the Museum a private or public institution?

The Singapore Art Museum is a public institution; a national operates under the National Heritage Board.

How large is the Museum collection?

The Museum permanent collection includes more than 7000 art works, the world’s largest public collection of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks with a growing component in international contemporary art.

What is meant by the term “permanent collection”?

The Museum’s collection comprise over 7,000 Singapore and Southeast Asian modern and contemporary artworks and over 1000 works from its Tyler Print Collection, that include some of the most prominent names in the 20th century international art scene such as Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, multimedia installations, drawings, prints, and photographs, among others..

Why are some artworks not on exhibition?

The Museum’s permanent collection includes over 7000 artworks, but only a fraction of these can be on exhibition at any given time. Sometimes works are lent to other museums for special exhibitions; sometimes they are in the conservation laboratory for study or maintenance; sometimes they are on rental to governmental or private organizations under the Artbank rental scheme. As large as the Museum is, there is not enough room to display everything in the collection. In order to present our best works, artworks in the collection are rotated periodically.

What are the current special exhibitions at the Museum?

Please see our Current Exhibitions page.

How do I find out how much an object in the Singapore Art Museum collections is worth?

The Museum does not disclose the monetary values of objects in its collections.

Can you tell me the value of an artwork that I own?

The Museum does not provide monetary appraisals or valuation of works of art.

How can I donate a work of art to the Museum?

Since its opening in 1996, the Singapore Art Museum has benefited from the generosity of the public in building its collections, and we continue to welcome gifts and donations of artworks. However, not every object is right for the Museum’s collection. The Museum’s decision to accept an artwork for the collection is based upon the extent to which it fulfils the Museum's mission, its condition and its relevance to the existing collection.

If you wish to offer an artwork to the Museum, please contact us at (65) 6332 3208.
We appreciate your generous intentions.
